"Our skin is more than a covering. It's a living part of us that responds to every emotion we feel." - Dr. Doris Day

The connection between your mind and skin is more powerful than you think.
We mostly focus on external factors when it comes to skincare—products, routines, and treatments—not knowing that sometimes, the struggle lies within your mind.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, stress can lead to an increase in acne, with 70% of people reporting an increase in breakouts during times of stress.
What's worse, 60% of individuals with eczema report that stress worsens their symptoms.
Self-talk can both be empowering and detrimental.
Positive self-talk boosts your confidence and reduces stress. Negative self-talk on the other hand causes stress and anxiety leading to skin issues like breakouts and premature aging.
One way of practicing positive self-talk is through choice of words. For example, instead of saying 'my skin looks terrible today', you can say 'my skin is sending me signals about what it needs today."
Here's how stress affects your skin........
When you experience stress, your body responds by releasing cortisol, the primary stress hormone.
Its production is important to the body since it is also the body's fight or flight response but when it is constantly produced, it slows down the production of collagen (cortisol triggers enzymes that break down collagen), the protein responsible for skin's firmness and elasticity leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
Stress triggers the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, which can clog pores and lead to acne.
It also reduces the skin's ability to repair itself, making it more vulnerable to damage.
If these are not enough reasons for you to avoid stress, then I don't know what is!

Mindful Skincare Rituals
#1 - Create a Calm, Relaxing Environment
Before you begin your skincare routine, set the scene to create a calm environment. You can achieve this by tidying up your space, playing soft music and even dimming the lights.
Its more than just the products you use, the ambience of the space you are in also matters.
#2 - Start with Deep Breathing
This helps transition your mind from the hustle of the day to a more relaxed, present state. Focus on breathing deeply through your nose, holding for a few seconds, and then exhaling slowly.
This will help you stress and prepare your body to absorb the benefits of your skincare routine.
“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” — Buddha
#3 - Be Present and Mindful in Each Step
Rather than rushing through your skincare steps, take time to really let each product sink in in every step. As you apply cleanser, moisturizer, or serums, focus on how it feels on your skin.
Notice the temperature of the product, its scent, and how it absorbs into your skin.
#4 - Facial Massage
One of the best ways to incorporate mindfulness into your routine is through facial massage.
Not only does it help with circulation and promote a healthy glow, but it also calms the nervous system and provides an opportunity for self-love and care.
#5 - Use Affirmations for a Positive Mindset
As you work through your skincare routine, say positive affirmations to yourself. This can boost self-esteem and encourage a loving relationship with your body.
Some examples can include:
"I am worthy of love and care."
"I embrace my natural beauty."
"My skin is healthy and glowing."
"I am calm, centered, and at peace."
